Roadracing in the Fifties and Sixties was a rich tapestry woven of the heroic deeds of brave, calculating riders competing on the most wonderful and diverse machinery ever to turn a wheel in anger. One man was there to capture these dramatic moments on film, Cycle World's European correspondent and photographer, B.R. "Nick" Nicholls. This year, Nicholls dug deep into the archive to find some of his favorite shots from this classic era.

About the Photographer

B.R. "Nick" Nicholls' first contribution to Cycle World Magazine came in March of 1962, just the third issue. Both a writer and a photgrapher, Nicholls had followed and professionally photographed racing since the mid-Fifties after the AJS factory saw one of his photos and liked it enough to buy it. His career was launched, and by the time CW founder Joe Parkhurst made his inquiry to a fellow editor in England about finding a reliable European contributor, the resounding recommendation came in favor of Nick. While his full-time job as a bank clerk was steady, reliable work, it was lacking in some regards. "I was never really meant to be a pencil pusher, and the appeal of photography and racing was that it was a great relief from the boredom of banking," he says. This year's calendar theme is "Nick's Picks," and these photos were selected because most show his love of the machinery. "From the beginning, I thought you needed to shoot from a low angle to show the mechanical bits and for drama," says Nicholls. "And I always told the racers that if they wanted me to photograph them, they needed to run without a fairing." Clearly, he didn't discriminate that much! Now 80, Nicholls is retired and living in England, his archive of more than 20,000 images in the hands of Mortons Media, "To keep if from getting thrown in the bin!" he declares.

The 2012 Cycle World Vintage Memories Calendar will transport you to another era with its amazing images, while helping you keep track of time in your own time, all year long. You won't want to miss a month of the action, so order your copy today!

Author: Michael Argetsinger

Foreword: Mario Andretti

Binding: Hardcover

Number of pages: 160

Dimensions: 9 x 11 inches

Formula One at Watkins Glen presents a vivid and often intimate account of the 20-year period that the United States Grand Prix was held at the classic upstate New York track. Author Michael Argetsinger was a young man when his parents, Cameron and Jean, first brought Formula One to Watkins Glen, and he grew up working with racing as the family business. Now, on the 50th anniversary of F1 at the Glen, he brings us his firsthand perspective on this unforgettable era.

Spectacular photographs combine with Argetsinger’s detailed commentary to capture the distinctive character of each year’s event. The story begins with rare images of the Formula Libre races from 1958 through 1960 that featured a sprinkling of top European drivers, Formula One cars, and sports cars, and set the stage for Watkins Glen’s first world championship grand prix. Stirling Moss, Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, Jack Brabham, Joakim Bonnier, Roy Salvadori, and Olivier Gendebien were the drivers who made early impressions and ultimately helped champion Watkins Glen as the site of the USGP.

This richly illustrated book presents dramatic race action, arresting portraits of key drivers and team leaders, and carefully researched facts that explain the forces that brought true Grand Prix racing to Watkins Glen, as well as the reasons leading to its eventual demise. A remarkable journey awaits you in these pages.

Authors: Dain Gingerelli, James Manning Michels and Charles Everitt

Binding: Paperback

Number of pages: 320

Dimensions: 8.2 x 6.4 x 0.8 inches

Since the advent of the first motorized two-wheelers, the motorcycle has exerted a powerful attraction for those of us with fifty-weight motor oil coursing through our veins. We might own one or two motorcycles (or maybe four or five), but we're constantly casting longing glances at a whole lot of bikes not in our garages. Whether big or small, young or old, male or female, polka-dotted or striped, we all have one thing in common--we love motorcycles. You might even say we lust after them.

365 Motorcycles You Must Ride might not take the place of a ride on your favorite bike, but it will satiate your moto-lust when you can't get out for a ride. On these pages you'll find a celebration of the motorcycle in all its two-wheeled glory, from Gottlieb Daimler's original wooden bone-shaker to the latest and greatest technological marvel from the Land of the Rising Sun and the best, worst, and most unusual bikes in between.

The Charly 1005 was first produced only in red in 1952 and as a successor to the Curvo 1000. It differs from its predecessor only by having its name inscribed on the tank and on the rider's kidney belt. The daredevil on the motorcycle leans into the bend and swings himself back along the straight. The stunt required can be set by turning the adjustment screw.

Director: Dana Brown II

Starring: Jimmy N. Roberts, Steve McQueen

Format: Color, NTSC, Widescreen

Number of Discs: 1

Run Time: 97 minutes

Don't be surprised if you feel a dry, tickling sensation in the back of your throat after watching the slam-bang racing documentary Dust to Glory. It's probably from the lingering sand and silt spewed from the knobby wheels of an array of machines that skitter from one end of the Baja Peninsula to the other. Using 90 cameras in a variety of formats, director Dana Brown captures the giddy danger of the race with truly visceral force. In 1967, a few California thrill-seekers had the Eureka spirit to take their homemade race cars for some whooping-up in the wide-open land just a few hours away. Since then, the Baja 1000 has turned into a party-fueled happening that's more akin to Burning Man than the Indy 500. It's billed as the world's longest nonstop race, running point-to-point for 1,000 miles through the Mexican desert from Tijuana to La Paz--pretty much the entire length of Baja.

Dana Brown is the son of Bruce Brown, whose 1966 film The Endless Summer sparked a surfing craze, and still holds up as an incomparable ode to the existential surfing lifestyle. Dust to Glory is by no means so profound and uses more of a Warren Miller thrill-marketing style (he of the annual throwaway extreme-skiing films). Cameras swoop down from helicopters, careen through silt, and are put into tracks over which vehicles pass at extreme speeds. In spite of the adrenaline rush, Dust to Glory is ultimately more about what people think about the higher implications of the competition.

From the creators of Step Into Liquid comes this absolutely exhilarating film about the most notorious and dangerous race in the world: the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. Showcasing Mario Andretti, Robby Gordon, Johnny Campbell and J.N. Roberts, and packed with awesome helicopter footage, in-your-face POV shots and stories of raw courage, Dust to Glory follows a wild assortment of motorcycles, dune buggies, ATV quads and tricked-out trucks in a 32-hour dash across 1,000 miles of unforgiving terrain and delivers such pulse-pounding thrills that you feel like you've been there.

Director: Mark Neale

Starring: Valentino Rossi, Barry Sheene

Narration: Ewan McGregor

Format: Color, NTSC, 4:3 Aspect

Number of Discs: 2

Run Time: 103 minutes

Special Features

Faster & Faster '03-'04: The Sequel

Interactive racing: Ride with Rossi, Biaggi, and Gibernau and switch between onboard cameras

14 additional scenes

Even if you've never witnessed the intensity of MotoGP motorcycle racing, Faster will take your breath away. It's a perfect primer for newcomers, offering a comprehensive survey of the fastest sport on two wheels, and it's guaranteed to satisfy hardcore fans with its detailed history, profiles of the top riders from the 2001-02 seasons, highlights of spectacular crashes and unforgettable races, and a veritable feast of the best MotoGP cinematography you're ever likely to see. From front-and-rearview cycle cameras to swooping overhead track coverage, filmmaker Mark Neale immerses the viewer in the MotoGP experience, enhancing the adrenaline-pumping visuals with expert interviews and commentary (and cool, low-key narration by globetrotting cycle-lover Ewan McGregor) that any sportswriter would consider authoritative.

Literally and figuratively, a lot of ground gets covered: From Kenny Roberts and the late Barry Sheene discussing their innovative knee-dragging styles and the origins of rear-wheel steering to the colorful rivalry of Max Biaggi and reigning champion Valentino Rossi (including Biaggi's infamous "Elbow Incident" at Suzuka in 2001), Faster never loses sight of the human element that makes this ultra-dangerous sport so fascinating. Track physician "Dr. Costa" is profiled (and offers some eloquently philosophical thoughts about MotoGP riders), along with innovative rider Garry McCoy (plagued by injuries); former champion Wayne Rainey (now paraplegic and active in kart-racing); young prodigy John Hopkins in his rookie season; and several other prominent figures in the world of MotoGP.

The bonus disc includes Faster & Faster, a sequel covering the 2003 and 2004 seasons, which saw the rise of the 500cc 4-stroke engine (and speeds in excess of 215 mph), Ducati's dominance and trend-setting removal of engine silencers (to boost power); Rossi's move to Yamaha; the fatal crash of Daijiro Kato; the victories of Sete Gibernau; and the rookie debuts of Neil Hodgson, Ruben Xaus, and Shane Byrne. Through it all, Faster and its sequel serve as the ultimate guide to MotoGP, certain to inspire future champions and armchair fans alike.

Author: Peter Egan

Binding: Paperback

Number of pages: 320

Dimensions: 8.9 x 5.9 x 1 inches

Since his work first graced the pages of Cycle World magazine in 1977, Peter Egan has taken his readers on one unforgettable adventure after another. Whether riding along the Mississippi River to New Orleans for a tin of chicory coffee or flying to Japan to test-ride new Yamahas, Egan's insight and gift with words makes every journey a unique and fascinating experience.

Leanings is a collection of Egan's favorite feature articles and columns from Cycle World magazine. Included among the twenty-one feature articles are Egan's first feature for the magazine, a story about his and his wife's cross-country trip on a British twin, his journey on abandoned Route 66, a history of the motorcycle jacket, and his visit to the fabled Tourist Trophy race on the Isle of Man. A selection of twenty-seven columns are also reproduced here, covering a wide range of subjects, from the nearly lost art of the kick-start, how to survive not being able to ride for an entire Wisconsin winter, and a look back at the motorcycle crash that nearly killed the great Bob Dylan.

For added perspective, each feature article is preceded by commentary from the author. This is an unforgettable collection of the works of a master writer whose simple adventures of life remind us all why we love to ride.

Even the most die hard of motorcyclists can't ride--or work on--their bikes all the time. So in those moments away from that precious Triumph, Suzuki, or Harley, Cycle World columnist and writer Peter Egan comes to the rescue--taking all kinds of riders along with him on his journeys.

Part self-effacing humor, part philosophy, part nostalgia, Egan's pieces remind us not only of all that matters in the motorcycle world, but in the world at large.
From a trip down the Mississippi to find the grave of blues artist Robert Johnson to rearranging his garage for optimal motorcycle ikebana, Peter Egan's stories hit home with all of us who define our good times with motorcycles. To get his view on how much your motorcycle habit really costs, which rock 'n' roll artists exemplify which bikes, the fine art of carrying motorcycle gear, and much more, crack open this book.

Author: Neil Spalding

Binding: Hardcover

Number of pages: 192

Dimensions: 10.7 x 8.3 x 0.6 inches

MotoGP is the premier class in motorcycle racing and it is there that the most sophisticated and alluring technology is found. For years Grand Prix motorcycle racing had featured prototype 500cc two-strokes, but the need for manufacturers to develop four-stroke technology led to the creation of the new championship formula in 2002, based on fire-breathing, 260bhp 990cc four-strokes. Competition is keen and factory teams guard their mechanical secrets and working practices very carefully. For these reasons it has been nearly impossible to closely examine bikes without bodywork or understand exactly how they are engineered and developed. Until this book.

Author Neil Spalding's ability to spot subtle detail changes and incremental developments from the restricted confines of pit lane, and then to correctly determine how these modifictions affect performance earned him the grudging respect of top teams. Eventually, Neil was admintted into the inner sanctum of the elite racing departments and give unparalleled access to explore and photograph race bikes to prepare this book. The only restriction: he couldn't make public his information until the end of the 2006 season, the last year of the 990cc formula.

This is the exciting story, told from the inside, of the most electrifying form of two-wheeled compeition and of the highly motivated designers, engineers, and mechanics who create these remarkable motorcycles.

Author: Andrew Trevitt

Binding: Paperback

Number of pages: 128

Dimensions: 10.8 x 8.9 x 0.7 inches

Sportbike suspension systems offer an unmatched variety of adjustments, but understanding how those adjustments work, and how to combine them to tailor your motorcycle to your riding style can be as challenging as riding well. That's why many riders never try to make the most of their bike's high-tech suspension simply because they don't know where to start or are afraid of making their bike handle worse rather than better.

Now, in the first book that specifically addresses sportbike suspension systems, Andrew Trevitt, senior editor of Sport Rider magazine and a former roadracer, guides you through the process of setting up your bike's suspension to suit your riding style. This book covers the basics setting static sag for your weight as well as more subtle and advanced adjustments, such as how to optimize rear-end squat. A comprehensive discussion on chassis geometry, suspension technology, and the many interactions among adjustments helps demystify suspension tuning. Andrew also explains how to analyze various handling symptoms and make adjustments to correct them. Plus, he offers specific setup techniques for both the street and the track.

You will be amazed by how much better your bike will feel after its suspension is correctly set up, and by how much more confident your riding will be with the improved handling. Sportbike Suspension Tuning will give you the necessary skills to experience the difference.

Binding: Paperback

Contemporary sport bikes accelerate faster, brake harder, and slice through corners deeper than ever before. These technologically advanced motorcycles are exhilarating to ride, but to really get the most out of your motorcycle's performance capabilities you need to develop your own personal performance. You need to take your skills to the next level.

Author: Marc Cook

Binding: Hardcover

Number of pages: 192

Dimensions: 11 x 9.1 x 1 inches

Suzuki’s GSX-R series is synonymous with performance and has become one of the most evocative marques in motorcycling. Its groundbreaking design established an entirely new category of race-replica motorcycles and forced competing manufacturers to respond to the GSX-R by adopting new technologies and often abandoning their own favored designs. To say the GSX-R forced the hand of sportbike makers everywhere is a dramatic understatement.

Suzuki GSX-R: A Legacy of Performance explores the roots of the original GSX-R750 concept, its showroom and racetrack successes, and how its eye-opening performance, lightweight design, and charismatic personality established a new market segment that Suzuki continues to define. Each generation of the GSX-R family is explored through interviews with Suzuki engineers and designers. Virtually every member of the original GSX-R development staff is still associated with Suzuki, and they all offer recollections of the bike’s gestation, providing priceless insight on the breakneck-speed engineering required to bring a light, fast race bike to the street. Readers will be taken inside the off-limits Ryuyo R & D center and proving ground, where the engineering and development of the GSX-R models are carried out. This is followed by a virtual factory tour that shows a GSX-R being built step by step.

Suzuki GSX-R: A Legacy of Performance offer’s an insider’s look at the most influential and winning marque in motorcycling, with hundreds of behind-the-scenes photographs, many of which have never before been published.

Author: Chris Jonnum

Binding: Paperback

Number of pages: 192

Dimensions: 10.9 x 8.9 x 0.5 inches

The world of top-level motorcycle road racing is so competitive that reaching it is an achievement reserved for only the very best riders. For more than one member of the same family to make it into this elite group is practically unheard of, but that didn't dissuade Tommy, Nicky, and Roger Lee Hayden. The brothers from Owensboro, Kentucky (or OWB, as they refer to it by its three-letter airport code) all ride for factory teams and have won many prestigious championships, including Nicky's 2006 world title in MotoGP the Formula One of motorcycle racing.

As dramatic as the brothers professional accomplishments are, they're matched by inside stories from their early days of racing that few people know. Led by their racing parents, Earl and Rose, all the Haydens began competing at age 3 (including sisters Jennifer and Kathleen) before going on to hone their craft on the dirt tracks of the American Midwest. Crisscrossing the country in a trusty box van, the young Haydens often fudged their ages to race against older and more experienced competition. The brothers soon advanced to U.S. national road racing championships, and Nicky and went on to international glory.

Written by Road Racer X Editor Chris Jonnum, and illustrated with previously unpublished family photographs and memorabilia, this is a compelling personal account of how one family's dedication, humor, and devotion to one another has made each of them successful and taken them to the peaks of motorcycle road racing.

Dimensions: 9.1 x 6.2 x 1.2 inches

It’s every motorcyclist’s dream. A friend or acquaintance says, “You know, there’s an old bike that’s been sitting in this garage for years.” The hunt is on. And rather than the usual worthless Hondazukimaha pile of hopeless oxidation, at the back of that barn you find a genuine classic, the motorcycle collector’s dream.

The Vincent in the Barn tells forty such stories--tales of motorcycle hunting dreams come true. From Ducatis in basements to Vincents abandoned in sheds, Harleys in barns to Brit bikes moldering behind urban garages, these are the stories that fuel every motorcyclist’s fantasies. The only difference? They’re true.

Author: Kevin Cameron

Binding: Hardcover

Number of pages: 216

Dimensions: 11.1 x 9.2 x 0.9 inches

This is the story of how top-class racing motorcycles have evolved, year by year, from the beginning of the FIM World Championships in 1949 to the present. Each year's championship-winning machine is described in a short essay with an accompanying data panel, and there are 14 longer essays on the various eras of design in championship racing. The essays create a narrative that brings together the many and ever-evolving influences of engine design, materials, tires, and chassis to reveal what technology has provided to help riders win races.

Told with style and great technical insight by acclaimed author Kevin Cameron, this is the development history of 500cc and MotoGP road-racing motorcycles from 1949 to the present day. It can be read as separate chapters, or as a connected narrative of the evolution of the engines, chassis, brakes, and tires used in World Championship racing. Intense competition, rapidly changing technology, and input from the world s best riders all contributed to the important design choices that ultimately led to today s MotoGP bikes and to the closely similar modern production sportbikes.

Power, weight, and aerodynamics are critical performance areas in all forms of motorsport, but the racing motorcycle must have a unique degree of drivability and balance. Power is usable only if the rider can accurately control it. Increased tire grip is useless if it supplies no cues to let the rider know the limit is near. Above all, the bike must act as an extension of the rider s style and senses.

This interaction makes the rider an inherent part of the design and engineering of the motorcycle. The process can be seen at work in the garages after every race practice. The rider talks with the crew chief and the data technician, whose laptops are open. They discuss what can be done to be quicker at key points around the circuit. Successful solutions become the subject of engineering meetings at the factory, and may immediately return as updated parts, or be incorporated as an element of next season s machine.

Unlike Formula One cars, which have little in common with road cars, either technically or visually, MotoGP motorcycles are not greatly different from everyday production sportbikes. They use virtually all the same technologies as their production counterparts, and closely resemble them. What s learned in this year s racing season affects the design of next year s production bikes. This continual process of evolution the result of improvements born of pragmatic problem solving at the track and in the race shop has created the procession of modern motorcycles depicted in this book.

In the wide world of motorcycle writing, there is no one quite like Kevin Cameron--and nothing quite like the opportunity this book offers for joining him on a long, entertaining, enlightening ride.

HONDA CR250R 1/18 Scale Motorcycle

Cycle World presents this authentic scale replica of the Honda CR250R. A Die cast model with plastic parts and a functioning suspension, this collectible is a great part of the Cycle World 1/18 replica set.

About the CR250R:

The prototype for the Honda CR250 was built in 1971. But it wasn't until late 1972 that production of "out of the box racers" began. It was made available for sale to the general public in 1973.

The CR250 is the longest running two-stroke motocross motorcycle of all time, being in production for nearly 37 years. The Honda CR250R is no longer produced. 2007 was the last year of production.

Many two-stroke enthusiasts regard the 2000 and 2001 as the best two-stroke 250 motocross bikes of all time, rivaled only by the 2005-up Yamaha YZ250. The 2001 CR250 had the 2nd generation aluminum frame that was loved by many riders, though refinements made to 2002-2007 frame was better. Ultimately, the best cornering CR frame made by Honda was the 1993 frame, which Jeremy McGrath used his 1993-1996 career.

Cycle World presents this authentic scale replica of the Yamaha YZ-400F. A Die cast model with plastic parts and a functioning suspension, this collectible is a great part of the Cycle World 1/18 replica set.

About the YZ-400F:

By now, it's a well known fact that the YZ 400's most striking feature is its engine.

Don't look for older model Yamaha XT and TT engine model parts on Yamaha's latest 4-stroke offering. Yamaha built the YZ 400 engine based on computer modeling studies. It shares little, if anything, with its ancestors.

Yamaha's foresight, coupled with its engineering efforts, places the YZ 400 beyond "Revolutionary", "Cutting Edge" or "Ahead of its time". Yamaha has developed and delivered a new competition machine that will change the way technology is applied toward motocross equipment, forever.

HONDA CBR600F4i 1/18 Scale Motorcycle

Cycle World presents this authentic scale replica of the Honda CBR600F4i. A Die cast model with plastic parts and a functioning suspension, this collectible is a great part of the Cycle World 1/18 replica set.

About the CBR600F4i:

For the 2001 model year Honda released an upgraded version of the popular CBR600F4 with intentions of becoming more competitive in the middleweight sport bike class. The 370 lb (170 kg) (dry) F4i is a modified F4 with numerous engine, chassis and bodywork changes.

The single largest change, other than the styling, is the addition of high-pressure (50 psi) programmed fuel injection - thus the model designation "F4i". In a number of countries sold as "F Sport". Fuel injection allows for more precise fuel metering and delivery over a wider rpm range, while providing better throttle response and decreasing emissions. The injectors reside one per cylinder and work with 38 mm throttle bodies. Each injector has four nozzles, and together the injectors add up to five horsepower over the F4. The wheelbase is five millimeters shorter than its predecessor, with a 5.9-percent increase in overall rigidity.

Weight was also reduced. The rear wheel was made 400 grams lighter, the cush drive 600 grams, and the front wheel 300 grams. The wheel bearings have been moved outward, closer to the fork tubes and the rotor carriers moved out closer to the brake calipers - all to reduce weight and to improve rigidity. Each caliper carrier also lost 100 grams. There's additional bracing on the steering head for more response, better feedback and feel from the front end. The suspension has also been tweaked with less high-speed damping and a little more low-speed damping.

Additional engine changes include a lighter cam-shaft sprocket and increased valve spring pressure (two springs per intake valve) which allow for higher revving. There are new piston rings that slide with less friction and increased internal engine oil flow. Redline is now 14,200 rpm, 700 rpm higher than the previous year's F4. To increase the bike's pulling capabilities at high speeds, 5th and 6th gears have been shortened slightly and the rear sprocket was enlarged from 45 teeth to 46. The oiling holes in the camshafts have been enlarged by 0.5 mm (to 2.5 mm) and piston ring friction has been decreased to aid cooling at the higher rev ceiling. Spring pressures on the intake and exhaust valves have been increased to avoid valve float. Also, there are now two valve springs (inner and outer) on the intake side instead of the single item that resides on the exhaust side.

Cycle World presents this authentic scale replica of the 1969 Triumph T120 Bonneville. A Die cast model with plastic parts and a functioning suspension, this collectible is a great part of the Cycle World 1/18 replica set.

About the T120 Bonneville:

The Triumph Bonneville T120 was a British motorcycle designed and built by Triumph Engineering Co Ltd between 1959 and 1972, when the engine size was increased to 750 cc.

The original Triumph Bonneville was a 650 cc parallel-twin (two-cylinder) motorcycle manufactured by Triumph Engineering Co Ltd and later by Norton Villiers Triumph between 1959 and 1974. It was based on the company's Triumph Tiger T110 and was fitted with the Tiger's optional twin 1 3/16 in Amal monobloc carburettors as standard, along with that model's high-performance inlet camshaft. Initially it was produced with a pre-unit construction engine which enabled the bike to comfortably achieve 115 mph without further modification, but later (in 1963) a unit construction model was introduced which was stiffer and more compact, including additional bracing at the steering head and swing arm. The steering angle was altered and improved forks were fitted a couple of years later, which, together with the increased stiffness enabled overall performance to match that of the Bonneville's rivals. Later T120 Bonnevilles used a new frame which contained the engine oil instead of using a separate tank; this became known as the oil in frame version. The T120 engine, both in standard configuration and especially when tuned for increased performance, was popular in café racers such as Tribsas and particularly Tritons.

Cycle World presents this authentic scale replica of the Suzuki GSX R750. A Die cast model with plastic parts and a functioning suspension, this collectible is a great part of the Cycle World 1/18 replica set.

About the GSX R750:

The illustrious history of the series begins with Suzuki's concept for first-generation GSX-R750 in March 1985: Born on the circuit, returning to the circuit. The GSX-R750 was designed to challenge global championships while fulfilling the sporting aspirations of non-professional riders.

Hiroshi Fujiwara, who was in charge of the basic layout of this first model, vividly recalls the excitement of his team at the beginning of the project. "This pure Supersport model was our first 750cc bike featuring an aluminum frame of unprecedented light weight and superb torsional rigidity. We had no real competitors in the market, other than factory racing machines."

The oil-cooled 4-stroke, 4-cylinder engine of the GSX-R750 delivered more than 100PS - far more power than any previous 750cc motorcycle. The exceptionally low dry weight of 179kg (395 lbs.) was equivalent to that of a 400cc-class model. Isamu Okamoto, engineer of engine design recalls: "We knew that reaching our goal of the world's best power-to-weight ratio required to realize overpowering performance would be an enormous challenge."

The GSX-R750 was a natural sensation among motorcycle enthusiasts and the press at a time when the capacity limit for Formula One and endurance racing had just been dropped from 1,000cc to 750cc. Suzuki's new 750 performed admirably in the AMA Superbike Championship and FIM World Endurance Championship and quickly became the racebike of choice among private riders worldwide, thanks to durability and affordability.

When American rider Kevin Schwantz rode the GSX-R750 into second place at the 1986 AMA Daytona 200, his name became synonymous with the machine. Schwantz's unique riding style on the GSX-R750 demonstrated an incredible man-machine interface that quickly engendered a legend. Victories in AMA Championship and the Le Mans and Bol d'Or 24-hour endurance events soon followed, to anchor the beginning of GSX-R750's winning history.

Cycle World presents this authentic scale replica of the Suzuki Hayabusa GSX 1300R. A Die cast model with plastic parts and a functioning suspension, this collectible is a great part of the Cycle World 1/18 replica set.

About the Hayabusa GSX 1300R:

Unique, timeless styling sculpted for wind-cheating aerodynamics. Long-distance comfort with effortless acceleration and sporty handling. A full 1340cm3 of broad, muscular torque. The Hayabusa 1300. A two-wheeled legend in a class of its own, defining balanced performance, defining Ultimate Sport.

The Suzuki Hayabusa (or GSX1300R) is a sport bike motorcycle made by Suzuki since 1999. It immediately won acclaim as the world's fastest production motorcycle, with a top speed of 188–194 miles per hour (303–312 km/h).

Besides its speed, the Hayabusa has been lauded by many reviewers for its all-around performance, in that it does not drastically compromise other qualities like handling, comfort, reliability, noise, fuel economy or price in pursuit of a single function.

Cycle World presents this authentic scale replica of the Ducati 999s. A Die cast model with plastic parts and a functioning suspension, this collectible is a great part of the Cycle World 1/18 replica set.

About the Ducati 999s:

The Ducati 999 superseded the Massimo Tamburini designed Ducati 916, Ducati 996 and Ducati 998 range of superbikes in 2003, and was produced through 2006. This motorcycle enjoyed great success in World Superbike, and was raced in the series through the 2007 season, despite no longer being produced, pending rules changes by the series' governing body, FIM, to allow competition of the new Ducati 1098.

The 999 was designed by Pierre Terblanche, amid much controversy over its divisive styling. It is known as an extremely high performance, race oriented motorcycle. With its traditional Ducati L Twin Desmodromic Valve actuated engine layout, it has a linear power delivery, with high power and torque figures available even at low RPM. Additionally, with its high spec suspension and trellis chassis, it is one of the finest handling motorcycles for its time.

Subsequently, more powerful 999S and 999R (provided with 102 dB Termignoni race-spec exhaust) versions were introduced, both capable of 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in under three seconds; and a top speed of over 170 mph (+270 km/h).

The 2005 Ducati 999S won the Maxisport category for the prestigious international Masterbike 2005 comparison and finished 2nd overall.

KAWASAKI Ninja ZX-9R 1/18 Scale Motorcycle

Cycle World presents this authentic scale replica of the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-9R. A Die cast model with plastic parts and a functioning suspension, this collectible is a great part of the Cycle World 1/18 replica set.

About the Ninja ZX-9R:

The Kawasaki ZX-9R was a sport bike manufactured Japanese company Kawasaki from 1994 to 2003. There were five model incarnations across two basic designs. Throughout its production run, it was both maligned and praised for its road-riding bias, which allowed for more rider comfort but less of a racebike-on-the-road experience of more single-minded competing designs.

The ZX-9R debuted in 1994. Kawasaki developed the model in response to Honda's introduction of the CBR900RR FireBlade for the 1992 model year.

Prior to the advent of the FireBlade, large-capacity Japanese sports motorcycles had become polarised. On one side were the 750 cc sport bikes, influenced by Endurance racing and the World Superbike Championship. On the other, the "big-bore" 1000cc-plus sports-tourers had become the natural evolution of the performance bikes of the preceding 20 years. In simple terms, the 750's had the handling, the big-bores had the power. In both categories, Kawasaki ruled. The ZXR750 offered the technology and the performance of ultra-expensive racing-homologation models from Honda and Yamaha at half the price, and it outclassed the similarly-priced GSX-R750 of the time, which still featured a perimeter frame and an oil-cooled engine, while the ZZ-R1100 held the title of the fastest production motorcycle on Earth.

Cycle World presents this authentic scale replica of the BMW R1200C. A Die cast model with plastic parts and a functioning suspension, this collectible is a great part of the Cycle World 1/18 replica set.

About the BMW R1200C:

The BMW R1200C is a cruiser motorcycle manufactured by BMW Motorrad. From 1997 to 2004 BMW manufactured 40,218 examples, including a smaller engined version, the R850C, manufactured from 1997 to 2000.

At the time of its introduction, the cruiser configuration represented more than half the US motorcycle market. The R1200C represented BMW's attempt to tap into this market — and was a significant departure from their previous endeavors. The R1200C was designed by BMW head designer David Robb, featuring a cruiser riding posture and evocative styling. From its inception, the R1200C featured a passenger seat that could fold up to become a driver backrest with three different angles, adjustable while riding.

When BMW ended production of the R1200C lineup, Dr. Herbert Diess, (then) President BMW Motorrad cited a prime reason for the bike's discontinuance as the apparent unsuitability of the 1170 cc, 61 hp (45 kW) engine to then current market tastes and the unavailability of a suitable available engine for further development, but did not rule out BMW pursuing a reinterpretation of the cruiser idea at a later date. The final model of the R1200C to be produced was the commemorative Montauk model, of which 350 examples were built.

Author: Alan Cathcart

Foreword: Jay Leno

Binding: Hardcover

Number of pages: 240

Dimensions: 11.1 x 9.4 x 0.9 inches

A deep analysis of America's boutique design and engineering shops where dream motorcycles - road racers to touring - are conceived and created - proving that America now arguably leads the world.

Twenty four bikes all tested and evaluated as only Cathcart can, providing not only a riding assessment, but a great insight into the thinking and engineering behind the bikes. It is a great read and as petrol head extraordinaire Jay Leno who wrote the foreword points out, he is the only one capable of providing a valid comparison across the whole spectrum of the world's most exotic motorcycles from all genres.

About the Author:

There is no truth in the popular rumor that Alan Cathcart is a Knight of the Realm – Sir Alan Cathcart, that is. There is, however, solid ground to state that he is the world’s most influential reporter within the motorcycle industry today. For over 30 years he has been using three innate skills – tenacious researching, flowing analytical writing and competitive test riding and racing ability – quite simply, at the highest level and better than any one else. Coupled with an English sense of humor and a personable character he is read avidly around the world.

He says he writes for himself. As a result, perhaps, he is appreciated for his honesty and forthrightness. The dynamics of the motorcycle suffer no half-measures, half-truths or uncertain and faint praise. And don’t question his riding ability: he is still able to pull off “qualifying” laps on numerous bikes within various world championship series.

He is the author of several books in addition to sending syndicated news and features to over 30 countries around the world. He lives near Warwick, in England, with his wife and family and a small eclectic collection of motorcycles and cars.

Author: Marc Cook

Binding: Hardcover

Number of pages: 192

Dimensions: 11.1 x 9.1 x 1.1 inches

Ducati 1098/1198: The Superbike Redefined tells the story of the development of the most powerful and charismatic Ducati Superbikes from the perspective of the designers, stylists, engineers, and managers. Every stage in the 1098, 1198, and 848's planning, development, and manufacturing is covered in impressive detail, and accompanied by hundreds of photos and illustrations.

Working with the full cooperation of Ducati management, author Marc Cook went behind the scenes at Ducati in Bologna and extensively interviewed designers, engineers, fabricators, and other personnel who describe the extraordinarily sophisticated and complex process of bringing out this new model.

Previously unpublished design renderings and CAD drawings reveal styling directions and technologies that were explored but not adopted. Riding impressions from international moto-journalist Alan Cathcart and Cycle World's road test editor Don Canet provide insights about the characteristics of these motorcycles with comparisons to the bikes that preceded them. The book also takes you everywhere from the off-limits prototype development areas to the assembly line. Think of this as the ultimate motorcycle factory tour. The interviews, photographs, and drawings combine to capture the tremendous excitement of being on site at Ducati.

In the end, Ducati 1098/1198: The Superbike Redefined is as much about the people of Ducati - their intelligence, humor, passion, and dedication to excellence - as it is the bikes themselves. This book will take you deep into the heart and soul of these revolutionary motorcycles and the remarkable company that created them.
